Politicians from the ranks of the Albanian opposition set fire to a pile of wooden chairs in front of the parliament in protest of a colleague being sentenced to prison.
At the beginning of a regular parliamentary session, they carried chairs out of the room and set them on fire on the steps of the assembly building, Reuters reported.
Security personnel quickly extinguished the fire.
The Albanian Court of Appeals on Friday confirmed the verdict sentencing Democratic Party opposition member Ervin Salianji to one year in prison.
A lower court had previously found him guilty of filing a „false report“ against a former interior minister, while Salianji denied guilt and said the trial was politically motivated.
Earlier this month, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha, who has been under house arrest since December last year, was charged with corruption for activities from when he was prime minister, which he denied.
The opposition Democratic Party has called for a major protest in the capital, Tirana, on October 7th.
